MANUKA HONEY

1. How is Manuka honey produced?

Manuka honey  is specializing produced in Australia and Newzealand, considered as liquid gold of human. Manuka is a pure white flower, manuka flower itself has a lot of health benefits, so when honey is attracted from this flower, and it will have superior antibacterial than other common bees. Science has proven that Manuka honey can control extremely dangerous MRSA and E-Coli viruses for both children and adults.

Manuka honey contains Hydrogen Peroxide, which acts as a barrier to prevent bacteria from entering the honey, so Manuka honey is always in the purest condition.

Manuka honey is harvested directly from beehives between December and March every year. The bile is then tested in the laboratory to check the antimicrobial resistance of the honey. Manuka honey was immediately harvested with UMF resistance from 10+ to 18+. To produce honey with UMF 20+ or above, Manuka honey will be stored in the factory for 1 to 2 years to ensure that honey enzymes are developed. After this period, honey will be checked for antibacterial and bottle-filling.

2. How to read the index when buying Manuka honey

UMF, MGO and NPA are 3 indicators used in evaluating the antibacterial ability of Manuka honey

  • UMF is a natural antibiotic index, available only in Manuka nectar.
  • MGO is an antimicrobial index, this index may be natural or may be made by humans from other ingredients, it’s not necessarily from Manuka flowers.
  • NPA is a form of evaluation of Manuka honey - it represents non-peroxide

There are correlations between these 3 indicators as below:

* MGO is measured in mg / kg Methylglyoxal (ppm)

* NPA is measured in% (% w / v) of phenol / water

How to read: (correlation between NPA, UMF and MGO)

  • UMF 15+ is equivalent to MGO minimum 514.
  • UMF 20+ is equivalent to MGO minimum 829.
  • MGO 400 is rated by UMF 12+ (or UMF 10).
  • MGO 550 is rated by UMF 15+

There is also another indicator, Manuka Pollen. Manuka Pollen index (25 +, 70 +, ..) indicates the amount of pollen in each bottle of Manuka honey. For example:

+ If a jar of 500g Manuka honey has a Manuka Pollen index of 25+, it means that in 500g of honey, there is 25% of pollen (equivalent to 125g).

+ If a jar of 500g Manuka honey has a Manuka Pollen index of 70+, it means that in 500g honey, there is a 70% of pollen (equivalent to 350g).

Quality honey that has the potential to treat diseases must have a UMF level of at least 10+. Good Manuka honey is a type of honey that has gone through a strictly testing process and always has a minimum UMF level of 10+.

In most types of honey on the market, they almost have Methylglyoxal (MG) but with very small content. However, in Manuka honey, MG is derived from the conversion of a compound called dihydroxyacetone, which is found in a concentrated form in Manuka nectar. Therefore, Manuka honey has strong antibacterial ability because of the high concentration of MG.

For all types of honey, children up to 1 year olds are usable. The antibacterial level of Manuka honey is not related to the age of the user. To increase daily resistance, just use a UMF-index of 10+ to 15+, depending on the health of the user, who has a poor resistance, then use a higher-class UMF. In the case of using Manuka honey to treat the disease, the use of UMF honey is higher, from 20+ to 25+, the elderly or those with cancer are no longer able to resist can use the The highest UMF index on the market is now 30+.

Theoretically, the higher the UMF index, the higher the antimicrobial ability of honey, which means that this honey is better, but when used for children, it is not a good indicator. For children, when using Manuka honey as an antibiotic, only 40g of Manuka with UMF 20 + / day, if used more, must be directed by a doctor.
